Update 23 - Fulfillment moving forward
12 days ago – Wed, May 08, 2024 at 06:29:34 AM

Howdy BioCryo Backers,

Some good news: fulfillment is moving forward!

I had a meeting with Tony over at PlusOne EXP, and we sketched out guidelines for the month and added the shipping rates into BackerKit. We encountered a few kinks that require ironing out from the BackerKit team. The next step depends on the when we get BK's response, and how long it takes to implement the adjustments.

That said, we’re confident shipping will begin by 14 June for US/UK/EU/Rest of World.

I will lock the pre-order store in 48 hours.

An important bit is sorting the date for shipping charges. Since we used BackerKit’s beta “Charge Shipping Later” feature, we need BackerKit’s input before we’re sitting on a comfortable enough timeline to give firm dates. So, expect an update within two weeks which will provide the following concrete KEY DATES:

KEY DATES

• Lock Pre-orders: Friday, 10 May
• Cards Charged for Shipping: TBD
• Lock Addresses: TBD
• Begin Shipping: Friday, 14 June

You will be notified 48h in advance for each of these steps. Please feel free to begin verifying your address and credit card information. If you need to retrieve your survey email, click here to recover your survey.

And as always, if you run into any snags, please feel free to reach out to me directly and I’ll help you sort out whatever issues are troublin’ ya.

Shipping Details

The biggest change in this project’s post-production phase has been the closing of Peregrine Coast Press, our UK/EU fulfillment partner. Now, PlusOne EXP is handling these orders.

Here’s the side-by-side of original estimates and current fees:

A table comparing price changes between February 2023 and May 2024. The average increase across the board is two dollars/euros/pounds higher than 15 months ago. Canadian costs are listed as “To be determined.”
I don’t yet have confirmation on Canadian shipping costs, so what Canadian backers see in BackerKit right are PlusOne EXP’s shipping rates from the US.

I hope to have a clearer view for Canadian backers soon, and will update once that front has resolved. Considering how volatile shipping charges can be, I think we’ve lucked out. Of course, please do reach out directly to me if the changes put you in an uncomfortable position.

Updates to come:

• Definitive Key Dates for shipping charges and locking addresses.
• The Canadian shipping situation
• 48h Advance notice before Shipping is charged.
• 48h Advance notice before Addresses are locked.
• When shipping begins!

Thank y’all for your patience throughout these learning pains for me as a new ttrpg creator. Once all is said and done, I plan on writing a post-mortem for 5MW Rokaner Reports, similar to the one I did for the development process on The Unseen City.

The next update is coming soon, so keep a lookout.

All best,

Chris Airiau

Update 19/20 - End of Year Progress
5 months ago – Fri, Dec 29, 2023 at 05:18:43 AM

Jolly End of 2023 Greetings, BioCryo Backers!

Well met and cheery tidings! I hope y’all have been bearing that good ol’ end-of-year crunch well, and have the opportunity for some rest and festivities these final two weeks of the year. I didn't want to email y'all after all this time without any concrete news:

In short, the palette is FINALLY on its way to PlusOne EXP! After a rough month and a half, the machine is chugging again. Woof. Kitting and fulfillment will take place soon after the New Year sets in.

Thanks for your patience through this period. In addition to the immensely frustrating shipping and customs issues, our household suffered our first covid cases. Illness and childcare sapped the lion’s share of work hours during two and a half weeks. And then Christmas office hours. Blerg. But all that’s through now!

Lemme fill you in on the trials and tribulations of exporting the palette of zines to the US from France.

Customs, Shipping to Fulfillment Center

La Maison Qui Rend Fou is a scene from a famous French cartoon film called The 12 Labors of Asterix. In this segment, the heroes, Asterix & Obelix must obtain a specific administrative form from The Building That Drives People Crazy. This kafkaesque parody of French bureaucracy is unsettlingly close to reality, and has been my own Herculean labor for the past five weeks.

A GIF of a lil blond dude with a Hermes hat walks with a big gimger fella throughout an adminstrative building, slowly going mad with frustration.
Asterix & Obelix : La Maison Qui Rend Fou

Instead of spending 500+ words of your time, here’s a bullet list (Sean would be proud. Luke, not) of events since the last update.

  • Nov. 17: DHL picks up the palette (even though I asked to sort admin stuff before).
  • Nov 22: They requested an exportation number; I discovered my tax-affiliation organization did not report my change of address to the appropriate admin services.
  • Nov 22-27: Emailing and telephoning no less than eight different French administrative services to change an address. The number of broken websites and clueless civil servants was tiresome, to say the least.
  • Nov. 27-Dec. 7: Waiting for snail mail to continue previous admin procedures. (Also: covid.)
  • Dec 7-11: With official document, I was able to complete several prior steps I couldn’t before. Cue more telephone wait music. (Also: kid sick.)
  • Dec. 11: New address still not updated on customs site. This time, though, the customs office was able to manually change the address. (This person was extremely friendly and helpful.)
  • Dec 12-19: “File under study.”
  • Dec 19: Contact DHL with exportation number.
  • Dec. 19-27: DHL folk out of office for Xmas? In any case, unresponsive.
  • Dec. 28: Receive new Custom Clearing documents to submit. Palette is cleared for customs!

What’s Next?

Once the palette arrives, PlusOne EXP will have all the materials to begin kitting the various packages. We’ve agreed to set an appointment in early January to work out the kinks, including re-assessing shipping costs. As some of you may be aware, Peregrine Coast Press, our EU/UK fulfillment partner, dropped out of the fulfillment business too, so that’s another lil Jan. 2024 hurdle.

As I’ve mentioned in the past, I will contact you with dates for charging cards for shipping, and a second time just before cards are charged. This won’t come out of the blue!

Short Announcement

The Outer Rim Uprising BackerKit is online, and includes all the pieces as individual add-ons if there's one or two pieces you had your eye on.

Thanks for sticking around, and if you have any questions, I’d be happy to answer them in the comments. Happy New Year, folks!

All best,
